The Hass avocado is a cultivar of avocado with purple or black skin that was first grown in La Habra Heights, California, by a postal worker named Rudolph Hass.
In the 1920s, Hass bought some avocado seedlings and planted them on his property. One of the seedlings produced a unique fruit with bumpy, dark skin and a rich, creamy flesh that was much tastier than the other varieties of avocados that were available at the time. Hass patented the tree and began selling the fruit, which he called the Hass avocado, in the 1930s. The Hass avocado quickly gained popularity and became the most widely grown avocado variety in the world. Today, Hass avocados are available year-round and are grown in many different countries.
